Flutterby 2

A collection of what’s winged its way across my path and got me thinking, grinning and gearing up.

7812f7b9de1f1de7c6719dd7ffba2978Time Cools All Jets: Emotions tend to flash hot in my household and this canvas cutout by Jim Marble might just help us all cool off. I ordered one for the kitchen wall.

What Matters in a Friendship: “I care that in the midst of the noise and clutter of our messy lives, that in the tiny moments we find to connect there is meaning, there are smiles even through tears, that we part feeling just a little bit stronger, a little more hopeful.” Yup.

Laurie Wagner’s True Stories SeriesLaurie is a great friend of mine and a true mentor and guide. I’ve been writing with her for years and there’s something magical about being around her table with women wanting and willing to tell true stories. This week she interviewed me for her True Stories Series. Honored.

1000+ Coffees: Imagine sitting down with each one of your Facebook friends and having coffee with them in real life. That’s exactly what Matt Kulesza is doing and he’s sharing the experience with us.

Emma Watson’s HeForShe Speech at the United Nations: I never took up the mantle of feminism, not because I thought it unworthy or some kind of man-hating theory, but because I didn’t understand how I could be a part of it. As a mom to three girls, I find Watson’s beautiful and passionate definition of feminism pure and meaningful. I am proud to say that I am, absolutely, a feminist.

Fiction: The Rhett Bulters by Katherine Heiny: This month’s issue of the Atlantic arrived on a brilliant, sunny day just at the beginning of fall. Finding myself alone outside by the mailbox, I plopped myself down on the stairs and went straight to the fiction section where I fell headfirst into this glorious story. What a gift to read uninterrupted for those few minutes.

3 Audacious Things Lena Dunham Wants by Kelly Corrigan: Even though I am nowhere near the same age, let alone in the same generation, as Lena Dunham or her Girls character Hannah, I adore her wit and wisdom. In this fresh interview with Kelly Corrigan – one of my favorite writers – Dunham does not disappoint. Plus she just wrote a book.

Stay-at-Home Mom Palooza: Essays, rebuttals, depictions and opinions about being a stay-at-home mom flooded my social media feeds this week. Here are just a few:

Dear Stay at Home Moms, Shut the Eff Up by Susannah B. Lewis

I’m A Stay-At-Home Mom Who Can’t (And Won’t) STFU, Thanks! by Ms. Suzanne Jannese

Being a Stay-at-Home Parent is a Luxury…for Your Spouse by Chaunie Brusie.

Dear Stay-at-Home Moms, Go Ahead and Complain by Stephanie Sprenger.

With Kids Off at School, How I Answer “So what do you do all day?” by Lauren Knight

Gay Dads Canadian Cheerios Ad: This is one will make you tear up. It’s awesome.

40 Portraits in 40 Years: These photos of the Brown sisters taken over 40 years are stunning and provocative. It’s not just about noticing the passage of time in their faces. It’s about recognizing the new and different points of beauty that surface with living a life.
